The main emphasis of Dr. Jones basic science research is on Hand Transplantation
and Nerve Transplantation and clinical research in microsurgical Toe-to-Hand
transfers in children and adults.
He has authored 200 scientific papers and
40 book chapters and has given over 550 presentations at national and international
Dr. Jones graduated from Trinity College, Oxford University in 1971 and Oxford
University Medical School in 1974. He trained in general surgery in England
becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. After completing a further
residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Michigan
from 1979-1981, he returned to England for a fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery at the Royal London Hospital and St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1982,
followed by a second fellowship in Orthopedic Hand Surgery and Microsurgery
at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston and Harvard Medical School
He was appointed Assistant Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in 1984 and became Associate Professor
Chief of Hand Surgery and Microsurgery in 1989.
Dr. Jones was recruited to
become Chief of Hand Surgery at UCLA Medical Center in Los
Angeles and Director of the UCLA Hand Surgery Fellowship in 1993
a dual appointment as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Professor of
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the UCLA School of Medicine.
After 15 years as Professor and Chief of Hand Surgery at UCLA
Medical Center, he moved to become Professor and Chief of Hand
Surgery at UC Irvine in
2008 and Director of the UC Irvine Fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity

He has been a Visiting Professor at more than 35 universities and hospitals, including the Kazanjian lecturer at Harvard University; the Richard Smith lecturer at Massachusetts General Hospital; the Barwick lecturer at Duke University; the Robert Ivy professor at the University of Pennsylvania; the Lawrence Schneider lecturer at Thomas Jefferson University and the Joseph Boyes lecturer at USC.

Dr. Jones was an invited speaker at the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) meeting in Santander, Spain and spoke on “Major hand trauma in children” and “Post-traumatic reconstruction of the thumb and fingers in children.”
Dr. Jones was one of the keynote speakers at the European Masters in Microsurgery of the Upper Extremity Course in Florence, Italy and gave presentations on “Toe-to-hand transfers in adults and children,” “Nerve grafting – indications and surgical techniques” and “Congenital anomalies of the hand.”
Dr. Jones was the Visiting Professor in the Department of Hand Surgery at the University of Modena, Italy and spoke on “Microsurgical reconstruction of the hand in children” and “Failed carpal tunnel surgery.”
Dr. Jones was an invited speaker for the Combined Meeting of the Australian Hand Surgery Society and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in Sydney, Australia and gave presentations on “Microsurgical reconstruction of the hypoplastic thumb” and “Long-term followup of Pyrocarbon arthroplasty of the thumb carpometacarpal joint.”
2015 Dr. Jones was one of two editors of the major textbook on microsurgery.

November 2015 Dr. Jones travelled to Cambodia along with six other hand surgeons from Australia and Thailand to provide hand surgery services to children and adults in Phnom Penh. The team taught over 50 surgeons in the first practical course in Cambodia on “Techniques in Hand Surgery.” In addition, Dr. Jones gave presentations to the Cambodian Society for Surgery on “The mangled hand – strategies for evaluation and management” and “Soft tissue coverage of hand and upper limb injuries.”
June 2014 Dr. Jones was an invited speaker for the inaugural Jesse
B. Jupiter International Hand Forum in Boston and gave presentations

2013 Along with 4 other surgeons, Dr. Jones travelled
to Cambodia on a mission to reconstruct both hand injuries
and children born with hand deformities. He also taught
surgeons in the first course on microsurgery held in
Cambodia at Sihanouk Hospital Center for HOPE in Phnom Penh.
